Art Gallery Visit #1-Responding to artwork

A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
1. A sculpture by Jan Hewitt Towsley made an impression on me. It was woven wire on board called Pulsing Resolve. It impacted me as a Fiber artist due to the intensity of the woven piece. It is woven with wire and then the edges are burned. It has a really fine warp and weft, thus showing it took a lot of time to create this beauty. There are vertical striped areas and the blackened edges go well with the black back board. This all emphasizes the woven piece. The piece protrudes from the wall in a wave-like motion. On the ends near the burnt part their is a rainbow effect.

 2. Another piece that made an impression on me was Adam and Eve on West 57th Street, by Thomas Insalaco. It is an oil on canvas painting that depicts Adam and Eve in today's modern NYC. There are modern taxi's in the background, Eve is holding a phone, and there are boutique's all around them. It is kinda showing how if Adam and Eve had not sinned we would not have all the beauty in the city and technology that we have today.

B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
1. I felt a connection with Whisper Words of Wisdom by Barbara Fox. It is a watercolor on paper piece that brings in the reflection of the room in the orbs. The orbs can be drops of water, balled so perfectly showing the importance of the paper and life. It is calming and mystifying. I felt a connection with this piece. Possibly due to how calm it makes reading seem, and I love to read. or the play on reflections. The room in the painting intrigues me. I love calligraphy letter as well.

2. Rosa Portuguese, a rose marble sculpture, I also felt a connection with. John Lombardi created a sculpture that is simplistic, yet detailed and beautiful. I like simple yet elegant pieces. The marble color is  almost skin tone like, peachy. It is plant like and has a black base. To me I feel as if it is a curved instrument  or a representation of a person. The curves, two vertical parallel lines, ad the green hints in it. This could be referring to jealousy.

C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?
  1. The Path Less Taken is a etching that I would definitely like to know more about. I have so many questions about this piece. Where are they going? What is the path? Is that water or ground? Why can some figures fly? Is that a magnifying glass that the animal is standing upon? What is the statement? Because it seems as if the path less traveled is one that belongs to hallucinative people.

2. An oil on linen painting, High Falls, by Phyllis Bryce Ely is a painting that leaves me wanting to know more. Why is the water green? Is it pond water? contaminated? high copper content or something like the Statue Of Liberty? Why is all the ground mud instead of beautiful grasslands? What made the artists depict this scene in this way?

Art Making/Material Exploration #2 Logo Design

1.Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.
I had quite some difficulty with making a logo for myself at first. I had no clue what simple thing could represent me. I was stumped. The elements I thought of were not simple enough to create and be representational. In the end though this is a very neat project!
2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in logo creation.
The process I went through was long. I kept on sketching and jotting down ideas, that in the end I tossed away. I finally came down to a few images that I liked the best. After that I improved these images and chose the one I liked best from those. The main ideas I used were the things I love, which is Fibers work.
3.What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?
The most important discovery I made while creating this logo is that I needed to be more simplistic. My ideas at first were too busy and did not get the point across.
4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, power point, and reading material for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important thing I learned from the materials was the type of logos and symbols; how they work in different cultures. I liked the videos. The bottled up video really showed an insight on the process industries go through for packaging.

Project #1

Creating an account on Photobucket.com was not complicated at all. I just simply linked it with my Facebook page, and from that it even recommended a simple username for me. After creating the account I was ale to upload the photos I took on my phone through the Photobucket app. This made the process even simpler. I then created the album and labeled each photo on what element or principle of design it is.
The process of capturing images that represented each element or principle of design wasn't too difficult. I was dog sitting in a big red barn and there are so many artsy things that the owners have. It was simple to just find something that met the requirements. Even one of the dogs fit into the category of the elements of design, texture!

Here is my lovely Photobucket album.

1. Color is the light reflected off of objects. White is the reflection of all colors, while black is the absorption of all colors. Lighter values tend to make people happier, while darker values have the opposite affect. The hue red tends to make people think about love. While the hue blue tends to make people depressed, it is linked to sadness. Really intensely bright colors tend to make people feel joyous and energetic. Colors have a great affect on people's emotions.
2. A theoretical aspect of color that intrigues me the most is the affect of color on emotion. It is neat how you can use a color to change someone's psychological mood. A color can stimulate you and make you desire to move and succeed. While a color can also have the negative affect upon you.
3.In the Color video the fact of how passionate artists get about color impacted me the most. Artists will go to all lengths to see the color that they desire. They feel the same emotions as their viewers through these colors as well, in their works of art.
4. In the Feelings video I was impacted greatly by the theory that color can show strong emotions. Patriotism, depression, religion, and much more can be represented with colors. The values, hues, and intensities used all make the difference in how you perceive the color. Your perception of the color your relation to the art work affect your emotions all together.

Module 2 Blog Post (Week 1)

Assignment:
This week for the class we watched two videos. One was Aesthetics:Philosophy of the Arts which can be watched at http://digital.films.com/play/M27YLB. The other was CARTA: Neurobiology, Neurology, and Art and Aesthetics which can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0TKYxAYGGA. We also read  What the brain draws from: Art and Neuroscience a CNN article available to be read at http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/15/health/art-brain-mind/index.html?hpt=hp_c3. Also, the first three chapters of our textbook Living with Art  by Mark Getlein.

1.For each video and article list and discuss the key concepts you learned.
Aesthetics:Philosophy of the Arts:
-Art is all copies of things in your mind. They are imperfect copies of a perfect idea. This shows that no true idea can be fully created in the way it was meant to be in the originators mind.
-There are 3 unities of art. These are action, time and location. This goes to show that are can really only occur in one location, from one action within a 24 hour time period, limiting art in ways.
-All judgements of beauty are subjective. IN other words, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this is based upon feelings or your past.
-Apollonian and Dionysian co-mingle in art.Clear images are mixed with delirium. An example pf this would be a work of art from Salvador Dali.
-Dadaism , Surrealism, and Cubism show that there are no necessary conditions to make something a work of art.
CARTA: Neurobiology, Neurology, and Art and Aesthetics
-The progression of art starts with the discovery of tools. Then leads to symmetry, symbolism, and then artistic composition. Showing how we used tools and other functional items as an introduction to the art we have today.
-Consensus partium is the universal search for harmony. We all need harmony in our lives, and art tries to find this.
-The 8 laws of art. Grouping, peak shift principal, contrast, a single cue, perceptual 'problem solving', symmetry, suspicious coincidences, an art as a metaphor. These were explained as to how we have developed these laws from early cave days.
-The goals of art is to distort and produce pleasing affects on the brain. This is shown with the somatic system which develops form, 3-D, position and motion. The Secondary visual ares is next in the process and deals with the visual detail and colors.

2.Which philosopher's theory on aesthetics do you feel is most important?
I feel that Friedrich Nietzsche's theory on aesthetics the most important. He believes that the will to live is the will to power and that art is a yes to life. He is from the 19th Century and said that "Only art can replace old mythologies". His contribution to the aesthetic theory is that Apollonian and Dionysian are co-mingled in art. Meaning clear images and blurred dreams are mixed with your impulse to lose all limits and submit to delirium.

3.What do you think about Changeux's and Ramachandran's scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture.
Changeux's scientific view  of aesthetics is that art is for communication and has developed over the last 1.5 million years. Artifacts are works of art, including arrows which represent the introduction to symmetry. The most interesting fact was that art makes us aware of oneself and another. It is not just for enjoyment but puts you in someone else's position at times.

4. How did the videos and articles relate to the readings in the text?
The CNN article and CARTA: Neurobiology, Neurology, and Art and Aesthetics both discuss how aesthetics are feelings aroused by sensory experiences. The urge to make art is also common between the readings. In Aesthetics:Philosophy of the Arts, Hegel (19th C) is quoted saying that "The work of art is a sensible object not only for the sensible intuition, but also for the spirit...". This shows how art is made for everything and not just for purpose.

5.What is your opinion of the films and articles? How do they add depth to the understanding of the topics in your reading in the text?
The CNN article and  CARTA: Neurobiology, Neurology, and Art and Aesthetics both linked together well and expanded on how the laws of art apply to life. I enjoyed Ramachandran's lecture. He made the laws interesting and humored me at times, which always makes a lecture better. The Aesthetics:Philosophy of the Arts video added more depth to the development of aesthetics and helped me understand this further. The CNN article definitely added depth to the reading with the video explanation.
